Appendix F.
Training and Planning Lists
These are todo lists, sometimes Òprioritized,Ó leading up to
the trip. The lists are in raw
form, unedited from when they were made.
Interestingly (or not) they reflect various attempts at prioritization
technique. Bottom line always is,
however, you canÕt do more than time actually allows.
Created 2006 July 22

List of warm up
activities for John and Dad:
February
- X Sit with a map and pre-plan the July trip
– also need a date
- get
the date, put in placeholder begin and end times
- X
studying the map together, identify things that might be long-lead, like hiking
or camping permits or ferry tickets or whatever
- take
action items to work on those things
- see
how much "in shapeness" we need, plan events accordingly
- repeat
this monthly in March, April, May, June and a final replan in July
- Make up a mountain biking toolkit and figure
out how to carry it
- Go on a moderate (1-2 hour) ride somewhere
relatively flat.
X Minor: ride in Saugus area on the trails that are relatively flat. Did this 2/4/6, repacked the toolkit
into bags we bought with flat supplies.
Major:
Ride the high trail above the 2 back to Lukens area and Palm Crest
March
Minor – re-explore Tuna area
-- check
the status of Wilson, May and June plans are still open
Major -- 2006_03_18
Rosemead to Rosemead via Irwindale trail to Long Beach, light rail and
"other (?)"
April
Minor 2006_04_01 Driver's license
stuff, initial training, training plan
Major -- 2006_04_15 motorboat thing at
Casitas
May – minor
June – Major – final preplan
July – It
Other ideas:
add the
200 minute walk (and maybe the dog) to John's list somewhere
also try
to plan a "major" ride, what we used to know as Crystal Lake.
Hwy 39
from 2 in the Forest down to Azusa.
And a
minor explatory driving trip, maybe in both ends.
2006 February 6
Result
of looking at the map:
Route
would be Highway 1 in California:
Santa Monica, Malibu, Oxnard, Santa Barbara, Lompoc, [maybe see a rocket
or even a rocket launch], Cambria, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Golden Gate Bridge,
Point Reyes, Ft. Bragg, Eureka [Chris Stones], Crescent City [tidal wave], then
continuing 101 in Oregon, Brookings, Coos Bay, etc. Astoria. Many scenic spots up there. Then in Washington, Aberdeen, Queets,
Sappho, Olympic National Park.
Return
trip would be I-5 from Seattle with possible detours to Mt. Rainer National
Park, Crater Lake, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou, and so on.
- All of
these places need to be investigated.
- An
approximate itinerary needs to be set out for tradeoff purposes.
- Also,
budget estimate, equipment needed, and bicycling or hiking opportunities.
-
Need
to talk about the role of ham radio or general technology, if any: Local comm.? HF? HF APRS? APRS? Also computing.
E-mail? Web updates? U.S. Mail updates? Cell coverage? Video games? TV? Radio?
Other things to possibly add to the training list:
-
Lukens,
from the fire station up (the ÒeasyÓ way).
-
SwitzerÕs
reprise (afterwards in August for Òcool downÓ)
-
Dominator
-
Saugus
with whole family
