Girl
Scouts
These are a few writings that have something to do with Katy's involvement in Girl Scouts as it intersected our father-daughter adventure.
Silver Scout Katherine Duncan, June 10, 2001
Katy came in the middle, between a competitive sister and a hyper brother, but she made her own space. She is bright, artistic, musical, and focused, if not always on the assignment at hand. She makes her own way. She cares about and serves others, whether her family needs the dishes washed (some of us figured out who the Dishwasher Fairy was), her charges on a babysitting job, thousands of Daisies and Brownies at a Girl Scout camp, her friends, or her church and God. Katy makes her community.
It took a while to finish that steep rock climb
and ring the
bell but she did what she had to and succeeded. The
Civil War Report wasn’t much different. She
sets her own pace. We gave her the
Indian name “she who would
argue with a rock” that resonated so well with her grandfather, and her
father,
because we knew that she makes up her own mind.
And now as the Girl Scouting phase of her youth comes to an end and she embarks on that great “end of the beginning” which is High School, we look forward to the person Katherine Louellyn will become, the service she will perform and the feats she will accomplish.
Katy, be safe, be good; we love you and always will.

June 11, 2000
Dear Girl Scouts and their Parents,
Here is the information that you will need for the Rock Climbing trip June 16-18, 2000. I hope you are looking forward to the adventure.
LEAVING: Sue Elftman, Belinda Wulke and I will be leaving from Sue Elftman’s house about 3 P.M. on Friday June 16th. If anyone wants to leave with us please call me and we will be sure to wait until we can all leave together. Steve Boyd will already be at the campsite by the time we leave so there shouldn’t be any problem. If your family needs to leave later that is fine too. June 16th is near the Summer Solstice so we will have plenty of light to set up tents. Just be sure to eat on the way or plan to fix your meal when you get to the campsite. Friday night meal is on your own.
FOOD: The meals all day Saturday and Sunday breakfast will be provided by our troop. Sue, Belinda and I will bring the food and we will ask the troop members to help cook. You may want to bring snacks to eat during the day but we will have plenty. Below is the menu for these meals. The only other meal your family will need to take care of is lunch on Sunday. Bring water bottles for the rock climb.
CAMPING STUFF: List of things for you to pack. included.
CONSENT FORMS FOR OTTER DISCOVERY TOURS:
You must have these completed and ready to turn into Steve Boyd:
* Medical Consent form for each adult and child
* Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risk for each adult and child
These forms are necessary even if you are not going to climb.
CAMP FIRE SATURDAY NIGHT: Our girl scouts will be doing skits and songs they have learned at other camps. (Start thinking about this Girls!!!!) If we have any other folks that want to lead singing or maybe a family skit we would be glad to have you participate too.
Please call me if you have any questions. Be sure you have a map and directions to the camp. If you need a ride call me. I have spoken to some parents and there is room in other cars. I’ll make sure you get there with your gear and home again.
This will be a great Father’s Day adventure and a neat way to start the summer.
Sincerely,
Viann Duncan (818) 957-8455

This is not from Girl Scouting, but is the text of an ad we placed in Katy's Annual for her Senior Year, which will come out in Fall 2005. We'll see if she notices it first here in print, here on the web, or in that annual. It refers to her participation in the All School Musical Music Man a year ago when she was a Junior.
